Artists are not automatically your friends. When you buy a commission you also buy an amount of their time for business communication, but this DOES NOT include casual chatting. If you have a commission related question, just ask. You don't have to chat me up first. [1/5]

If you want to get to know me, hang out in my streams and reply to my posts. If I start interacting back, gradually up that until we naturally become friends (or don't). Do not try to skip that process by exploiting my obligations to you as a client. [2/5]

Asking about my life through professional channels will get you the professional answer (read: polite lies). I'm not going to share my genuine problems or feelings, and spending 20 minutes on this kind of small talk is exhausting and pointless. [3/5]

It's also very uncomfortable when commissioners call me pet names, flirt, etc. It's difficult to express that discomfort to a client directly for fear of seeming mean and unapproachable, but please don't mistake professional friendliness for romantic interest. [4/5]

This is not directed at anyone in particular, just a general trend I've noticed. Not trying to scare anyone off from trying to be friends or from contacting me about their commission - just please keep reasonable boundaries in mind. Thanks! [4/5]

Someone made a really good suggestion - you can also ask if an artist is interested in chatting! It leaves them the option to say no if they don't have the energy

I feel bad now because I do this lol. Not necessarily via just commissions. But I’m just too darn friendly to not try and have a conversation if we have a moment of common ground. Even if it’s over a business transaction. I’m not the best at social cues either tho haha.

Don't worry about it - you can always just check whether an artist wants to chat! There's also nothing wrong with a simple "how are you" either way
