The thought of Toni Morrison no longer being in this world is incomprehensible. She was our oracle, a transcendent fact of life for any writer. We were not worthy and can only be grateful that we overlapped with her time on this planet.

Despite the Nineteenth Amendment, which passed Congress a hundred years today, voting rights for all American women were not genuinely guaranteed until the Voting Rights Act was signed in 1965:

The very idea of our society, higher-ed or otherwise, being a "meritocracy" is something that was made up to justify & reify existing social hierarchies. It's not real. What's real is how wealth & race combine to give ppl things that they tell themselves they inherently deserve.

Some ppl don't fully appreciate the psychological toll it takes on a student to navigate a school environment that both implicitly & explicitly tells you that you only got in because of an undeserving hand-out, meanwhile somebody's parents donate a building & no one bats an eye.

Thinking about all the black, brown, & low-income students who arrive at college & who are made to feel as if they don't deserve to be there, while so many wealthy students have their parents essentially buy their way into these schools & rarely experience the same skepticism.

We believe that THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS should be required reading for all Americans. Toni Morrison said it best, “Profound, necessary and an absolute delight to read.”

Honored to have 3 of our authors on 's nonfiction reading list. These works from & Bryan Stevenson "can help us better understand our country’s past and our evolving, persistent struggles with race"

Tenured. My grandparents were literally share croppers on one side, and on the other, my grandfather was denied promotion for decades because he was black. This is for them.

I've had locks multiple times in my life. The process of cutting them is something that I would plan & carefully select who did it. It can be an emotional experience. To have it happen in public like that is gross. Every adult in the building is at fault.

I believe there should be no Confederate statutes in places of honor and that academic workers should have the right to withhold labor without the draconian penalties UNC has threatened. These principles are important.

Isabel Wilkerson is a national treasure, and her essay about Michelle Obama and the Great Migration is one of the best things I’ve read all year.

Great review of Michelle Obama’s amazingly candid memoir by Isabel Wilkerson. As Wilkerson says, there’s so much going on in this "refined and forthright, gracefully written and at times laugh-out-loud funny" book.

It is always moving to go around the world and see African American culture, and the influence of AA Culture. EVERYWHERE. Europe, Australia, Africa, South America.

What an absolutely stunning essay has written. Hands down the most beautifully-observed, moving book review I've ever read.

this essay by on michelle obama's "becoming," is, for lack of a better phrase, a tour de force. it's worth a read, not just for what it says about the book, but also for the context it offers:
