An indisputably good result: locally sustained research institutes that continue to serve their communities were established. These institutes provide a path for academic success for local researchers (as opposed to parachuted-in American or European scientists).

Something iffy: the primary benefactors from all of this early work were white American scientists, including basically every single famous historical 'emerging' virologist, from Shope to Casals to Aitken to Downs (to several living ones who I do not want to start beef with.)

The communal knowledge model that arose from this program was amazing, and something I hope we can return to going forward - they created comprehensive guides, like the ICAV, which is available online now as ArboCat, but hasn't been updated in a whiiiiile.https://twitter.com/DiagnosticChick/status/1109137002891567112 …

WRCEVA is another amazing resource that originated here - they're a repository for virus isolates, and will provide antibodies to viruses + reagents on request - but who benefits from the maintenance of that resource nowadays? Is it the communities who provided those isolates?

Focusing on establishing & cultivating relationships w/ local infrastructure, rather than extractively gleaning authorships, prestige, and data from projects with local collaborators that only get middle (or no
) authorships & limited applicable info out of it, is so important.1 reply 1 proslijeđeni tweet 14 korisnika označava da im se sviđaPrikaži ovu nit -
Our choices reflect the people we value. We need to constantly ask ourselves: why am I doing this work? Whom does it benefit? Are there ways I can more thoroughly center populations that are actively marginalized by the Global North in how and why I do this work?

Am I giving authorships and credit to the local partners and technicians who make this work possible? Am I giving supportive funding to people whose data I want to use? Are the people I choose to collaborate with doing the same?

Which papers am I choosing to cite? This is a really crucial one, since Global North scis at affluent universities really love to cite each other and build each other's prestige that way, while useful & informative studies by Global South scis don't get attention.

Which viruses am I choosing to study? The flashy, fundable ones tend to be those that pose a "pandemic threat," but that usually just means "could actually spread from already severely affected areas of the Global South to predominantly white regions."

For example: do you consider Oropouche virus to be a 'potential emerging disease' that *could* cause serious harm, or do you recognize that it already causes *thousands* of debilitating infections annually in South America?

If we are not actively interrogating ways to make our science more just, we will inevitably be doing harm. Period. We have to make deliberate choices to correct the inequality that was built into the foundation of our field.

The only way we start doing better is to highlight this at every conference, and to lead by example. Liked the read, do feel things are changing for the better. – mjesto: Station Amsterdam Centraal
