On a copyright basis, yep! If a particular mechanic is patented then a different question entirely, which I don't think is the case here!
(Realised I wasn't clear; as in you cannot copyright a game mechanic generally!)

nah you were clear! that's what I assumed was the case (cough, billions of clones of flappy bird, bejeweled, bomberman, etc)

One thing that is arguably copyrightable (more successful in some territories than others) is the 'look and feel' of a game.
