Games friends, a recommendation please: a modern(ish) RPG that is as fun to play as Divinity 2? Great combat more valued than story, though both are important. (I'm.also woefully out of date in the genre.)

Ooh interesting! How is is better in coop? Although I'm unsure if my DS2 buddy will last with me into DS1...
DS1 is max 2 player co-op (rather than up to 4 in DS2), so there's is more focus on the interaction between the two players. Although given story isn't your focus that might not matter much to you. 
I'd probably have a break before embarking on it tbh!
