Games friends, a recommendation please: a modern(ish) RPG that is as fun to play as Divinity 2? Great combat more valued than story, though both are important. (I'm.also woefully out of date in the genre.)

Thank you! I suppose I had thought it would find it less sophisticated and smooth after starting with DS1?
Currently playing DS1 after DS2 and it's definitely worth playing There are a couple of things that have been improved upon but the core gameplay remains the same (plus I'd say in some places it's a better 2 player co-op than DS2).

Ooh interesting! How is is better in coop? Although I'm unsure if my DS2 buddy will last with me into DS1...

DS1 is max 2 player co-op (rather than up to 4 in DS2), so there's is more focus on the interaction between the two players. Although given story isn't your focus that might not matter much to you.
I'd probably have a break before embarking on it tbh!
