The eye &toe were pretty unquestionably the belongings of people of considerable means. Commoners with the same injuries likely went without, especially if they could function reasonably well day to day despite the loss. But. What if the nature of an injury was more severe?

Yeah, so, here's one of my new favorite ancient prosthetics. About 2,000 years ago, a man in ancient China experienced *something* that caused his knee joint to fuse. It became stuck, permanently, at an 80-degree angle.

This is a handmade, modest prosthetic leg, worn strapped to the thigh with material laced through its numerous holes. the bottom is a HORSE'S HOOF, reinforced with sheep or goat horn around the "ankle." a repair is apparent about midway down.
