A lot of people missed it but desalination was a big technological success story of the 2010s. An Israeli firm managed to make it dramatically cheaper and Israel is now a large exporter of water.

Desalination capacity seems to be improving quickly! Water seems to be one of those issues where there is a great economist solution no one likes (price water), and a technological abundance solution (desalination) that’s maybe more feasible twitter.com/rpoo/status/16…
So in Israel they are using it to refill the Dead Sea. In general it’s fine as long as you spread it out. More expensive but completely viable to drip feed it over 100km2

I tried to do some back-of-the-envelope calcs on what SMR nukes + desalination + desert greening would cost as a carbon capture mechanism, but got lost in the greening bit. Biology not my strong suit.

I remember when people were talking about potential future water wars, but water availability is really always energy availability.

Israel is using it to refill the Dead Sea. Beyond that the Israeli method is chemical free so you can actually just return it to the ocean as long as you are careful to spread out the discharge so you don’t get a small area that’s extremely salty.
