My new book is out! "Our Tango World" is a sociological, psychological, poetic & anecdotal exploration of Argentine tango & how it feels to be a devotee. US readers can find it here: The rest of the world, order it here:

Today an entire news cycle was based on a video posted by one anonymous twitter account, and everyone built an entire world of context around it that had no basis in reality. We. Are. So. Fucked.

I follow Hamid and imagine this is an uncharitable simplification of his POV. There are two possible conflated issues: 1) Was Bolsinaro legitimately elected 2) Is he an awful person. What do we do in situations where 1 and 2 are both correct?

I think widespread corruption, crime and poverty in our giant neighbour were the main reasons to be fair. But this is a remedy worse than the disease.

It's OK that he is a murderous fascist (quite literally) because he was democratically elected. This is the same argument uses to justify Islamism. You're both wrong. Sometimes the people choose badly. Very badly.

This is the same thing people say about Trump: "the media lie about him." LITERALLY every single thing I know about Bolsonaro (and about Trump) I have heard from his own lips, in public statements, on the record. It's not commentary. It's LITERALLY his own words.

I'm reading a fascinating book about how our ideology influences what we *want* to see the world and how that interferes powerfully with the actual information hitting our eyeballs and I can't think of a better example than this.

This is your brain on anti-SJW ideology. I am a fierce critic of the excesses of the social justice left. But Bolsonaro is a fascist. His irresponsible attitude towards the rainforest is a threat to the planet & his extreme homophobia a threat to our LGBT Brazilian neighbours.

Obviously, you're not going to do this with everything you read. But if the book really seems pivotal—and this one does; for me personally, it's probably the most important thing I read in 2018—then you should. Your chance of retaining the meat of the work is much greater.

If you come across a book that rewards close attention or seems important to you, don't just read it once & put it aside. Do a little old-fashioned studying to impress the most important parts into your noggin especially if, like mine, your memory isn't what it used to be.
