    Thanks to and colleagues we know that some Chondrocladia live in symbiosis with bioluminescent worms, raising the hypothesis that the worms attract food for both the carnivorous sponge and the worm. In exchange? The sponges don't digest the worm.

    Often the specimen is more than the animal itself. Here, these ethanol-soluble pigments, if stable over time, will be preserved for biochemists interested in characterizing them.

    Today's strikingly blue sponge collected during EX2107, when placed in ethanol, turned that ethanol blue as the sponge turned white.

    Just in case you missed this view of Magnapinna spotted during expedition EX2107. Our encounter with this large but rarely seen squid was brief but special indeed. Good thing we had our expert Mike Vecchione on the "squid phone".

    The ctenophore (comb jelly) Bolinopsis, which can live from the surface to below 2000 meters. Other closely related species are found in the tropics and in polar waters, making them an excellent candidate for comparative studies. Ctenophore membranes have different lipid compositions, with chain length and double bond index (unsaturation levels) varying with their habitat.

    This thing is BONKERS! trans: Anemone eats gorgonians: expands 11 times in size! Dactylanthus antarcticus lives on the seabed in a mobile way, that is, it is not fixed to rocks or sand, but moves in search of gorgonians (soft corals), which are its favorite food.
