Organized retail crime is weighing our City down - we can’t afford to lose these anchor stores. Waiting to hear back on my letter of inquiry from our DA @chesaboudin and Police Chief Bill Scott @SFPDChief on their coordinated strategy.https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/Target-San-Francisco-stores-reduced-hours-why-16284219.php …

Once again we're taking a corporation's word at face value. Even article notes "labor shortages" as another explanation for cutting hours (though the author somehow wonders why Costco, famous for providing good wages and benefits, hasn't had to do so).https://www.cato.org/blog/retailers-adjust-work-schedules-offset-minimum-wage-hikes …

Perhaps think 30 secs before you talk..Costco has gated entry only for members and people waiting to verify your purchase when you leave. Much harder to go steal from them because of this

Sounds like they’ve hit on a solution that doesn’t require public expenditures or dangerous police response, that’s great!

So you’re saying we should gate the public by requiring a membership fee for every store, like Costco? I would shop less at stores if I had to pay to enter every single one

No, I’m saying there are other “solutions” to the “problem” Target is experiencing. I imagine the easiest solution is to pay more/offer more full time work. But would be interesting to know what the five and dime in Laurel village is doing that’s keeping them at regular hours?

Do you have data to suggest that paying more/having more jobs actually reduces crime? Without any real punishment for theft, seems much easier and more profitable to continue stealing rather than work a regular job.

I don't! Would be interesting to collect. Anecdotally, you don't often see middle-class shoplifters. But I meant I don't think Target is reducing hours due to theft, given similar stores aren't. I think they're doing so to avoid making their smaller workforce full-time employees

The Rose, always the Rose. Instant disregard. the the lunatic fringe that somehow has captured power in this city without anybody taking them seriously. They certainly showed us they are serious. It’s our fault. They are what they are.
