there is strong biological basis for "good outcomes" with precocity, but just b/c they feel pressure to do what "others want them to do btr" doesnt mean that they'll be happier doing that thing. also some are clearly precocious in thought/output even if they fail standard tests

I'm horridly guilty too - there was period of time where my online output went down simply b/c I emailed people to ppl rather than just post it all online in format where i would repeat myself less and get rando strangers to understand me better w/no extra effort on my part

it seems odd/low-confidence that many would rather contribute suggestions to someone else's list/wikipedia (after all, where does scott alexander get ALL of his suggestions ) than to create their own docs/repositories given that they should have more control over their own lists

    - a lot of thiel fellows "fucked off" for a few years to do whatever after their fellowship and still seem fine developmentally - early entrance students at UW generally punch above their weight, though the smartest ones among them are generally disappointed with themselves

But oftentimes stories of precocity sends people into the wrong tracks that cause them to overoptimize for the wrong things, or for the emotional damage that comes with disappointing ppl (esp if one decides to "fuck off" and do whatever for several years)

precocity stories cause emotional damage to many, but still are justifiable to care about simply b/c the correlations of early-life achievement and later life achievement are still very high, and monitoring how precocity develops is still one of best ways of generating surprisal

Why hasn't Twitter still yet allowed people to organize their tweets into folders?

Gwern is so inspiring to many precisely because he's a NEET who gets super high status readers (like even thiel) and he crushes many people's weird conceptions of how to get desirable outcomes (but ppl like him are still so rare!!)

Two new assistant professors I know mass privated ALL their content on quora and online once they got the assistant professor position which is a tragic indication of how afraid they are to express all their views freely once they're in academia

How hard would it be for Quora to rank answers differently for different people depending on how it categorized people's "taste for complexity" or "reading level"? Evidently simpler answers are going above more complex answers in answers to the most common questions..

after I got sick of quora turning normie on all the mainstream topics, i did some aggressive culling and now everything on my quora feed is predominantly AI & Hardware topics, and my quora feed is marginally more useful again [tragically it also shows how little biochem there is]

CEOs have a certain kind of wealth that isn't captured in their net assets (their wealth is their ability to motivate ppl to work for them) [dictators have more of that kind of wealth]

also, cause wealth inequality drives people to work for each other, btr question is "what would i do if i were dictator of the world" (being dictator means you have more wealth than even a billionaire in a market economy - good luck on getting a great pyramids constructed in one)

there are surely other examples but are truly hard to find also i think in a lot of people the drive in them to create fundamentally new formats of knowledge decreases, but both craigslist and jimmy wales were pretty old when they started

this is why i try to ask people "what is on your wishlist if you had a billion dollars"? Most billionaires aren't able to make effective use of their capital when they still have the neuroplasticity to direct it, which seems awfully strange to me

what counts as a "reasonable request" for one person wouldn't be a reasonable request if everyone in the world made it, but right now, there are so many requests people are so afraid to make b/c of this excess social conditioning, and more simply belongs to those who get it

Most underrated skill: knowing how to make reasonable requests (and apologizing if one moves too fast). Fear of being seen as greedy is huge reason why most people tragically fail at making reasonable requests (though maybe you can make memorable checklists FOR them)
