Anyway, back to the point. While I originally coined the term "Massachusetts racism" to refer to one specific phenomenon, we can absolutely expand the term to "blue state bigotry," so let's. Call it BSB for short. (6/17)

In certain community spaces, especially those for oppressed groups, we talk about performative allyship. I've been on the receiving end of performative allyship, and it is undoubtedly frustrating. I think that BSB takes it to another level. (7/17)

Performative allyship can be annoying, invasive, overbearing, and silencing, but there are still occasional iterations of it that are well-intended and in good faith. BSB is clear, open aggression, micro- or otherwise—and it's impossible to challenge it. (8/17)

Say what you like about bigotry in red states (and there is PLENTY to say about it); at least there's a sort of intellectual honesty surrounding it. Nobody is going around saying "I can't be racist; I voted for Obama." (9/17)

Compare that to my high school, where students of color, queer students, neurodivergent students, and young women were told over and over that the bigotry they were facing couldn't possibly be real because we were a "liberal school." (10/17)

I'm not saying one is worse than the other. Comparing bad situations is inherently counterproductive, and I already get enough Oppression Olympics-type discourse on Tumblr for about three lifetimes. But BSB IS GASLIGHTING. (11/17)

I mention all of this now because for the last week-ish, my Twitter feed has been flooded with the story of @TeamYouTube's treatment of @gaywonk (Carlos Maza). (12/17)

Instead of celebrating himself like the rest of us gays, @gaywonk has spent the first week of his Pride Month painfully detailing how @YouTube purports to celebrate the queer community... (13/17)

... while allowing far-right YouTubers to post despicable queerphobic content while selling t-shirts with slurs on them. On multiple occasions, @gaywonk's @voxdotcom series (Strikethrough) has addressed this issue, including one video about @YouTube specifically. (14/17)

Watching this play out in reality, with @gaywonk himself as the example, and watching @TeamYouTube do nothing while changing @YouTube's icon to a rainbow version of the logo, while Tucker Carlson mocks Carlos on his show, is painfully ironic. It's also BSB in a nutshell. (15/17)

So congratulations, @TeamYouTube. I would say that you've invented "California homophobia," but I think you've done something far worse. You took the already-existing California homophobia and loudly proclaimed that you're willing to profit from it. (16/17)

To @gaywonk and every other queer person on @YouTube right now, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you were tricked into putting yourself out into the world on a platform that pretended to be safe, only to be met with this BSB BS. I'm sorry, and I love you all. (17/17)
