There's no reason that the changing moment of inertia should affect the amplitude or direction .. so it seems that the entire pattern is made by air resistance and friction

But does it really? Let's imagine two pendulums of equal mass swinging in parallel, then closer and closer to each other and finally touching and staying together. Does it cause a sudden change in the period? I suspect that the change in period is caused by friction only.
