Standing waves can be created by vibrating a string fixed at both ends •If you vibrate the string at one of its 'special' (i.e. resonant) frequencies, the wave doesn't propagate; rather it just sits there vibrating up & down in place ©https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnH2ltfW48U …pic.twitter.com/N166Xk2wAH

Standing waves are nothing more than a consequence of superposition •When the sine wave sent in from the left gets reflected off the pole on the right, the reflected wave is π out of phase with the incoming wave 👉Adding these two signals together results in a standing wavepic.twitter.com/yMGdhLXrPM

If you force it (under the same boundary conditions) to oscillate at a frequency that is not one of the resonant frequencies, you also get standing waves, but you need an infinite number of modes to describe the oscillations.

Is this in any way connected with the “chime” effect you can get when lightly holding your finger on a guitar string at certain intervals and plucking it? It only works in a few places on the fret board.

Yes, those places are at half way, a third, quarter, etc. Some ring much more loudly than others (don’t know why)

If SpaceTime flows & Gravity weaves, can gravity be manipulated in the same way “standing waves” work? If so, would this be able to explain how a “magic carpet” functions? 🤔 #WillSmith @disneyaladdin @MIT @NASAJPL @JHUAPL @jhbspacex

Is this the same thing that enables harmonics in guitar playing?
