      i would also say that this is an odd criticism .. being impressed by someones ability in X only makes me want to work harder at X .. if someone gets dejected by the mere fact of someone else being good at something, i don't feel it's my job to fix that

      saying "maybe" doesn't absolve you from backing your claims up .. the term is also a rhetorical device (e.g. "maybe you should just shut up and listen")
