Fun fact about the l'Hôpital theorem : l'Hôpital didn't write the theorem. He was wealthy and had one of the Bernoulli to demonstrate it for him in exchange for cash.

Isnt lim n-> -1 (x^n +1 )/(n+1) the definition of the derivative at n=-1? So using L‘Hopital is kinda circular, right?
