Not sure that's true. They stack directly on top of each other either way.
I think the shape also handles stress better to minimize cracking etc.. also if there were no free space in the container and just had circles you couldn’t grab it (easily) out of the tube

The real reason for the shape: It changes the aerodynamics of the Pringles, which means they can run the production machinery significantly faster.
