One of the simplest fluid models is the so-called Trochoidal Wave •It describes each water particle as tracing out a circle whose radius decreases exponentially with depth, & has each particle share the same rotation frequencypic.twitter.com/i5fx93TXQQ

I think perhaps the density is uniform after all. The dots get closer vertically when they are more distant horizontally.

It is my understanding that the displacements are infinitesimal so each fluid parcel is not actually compressed.

The number of particles (e.g. water molecules) between the sparse grid of dots changes in order to maintain constant density. A Rayleigh in geophysics. In a solid which can support shearing motion this type of approximation does not apply. My take !
