Why is it that authors refer to matrices as tensors, especially in continuum mechanics? I'd imagine it is for generality when we start working with the gradient and hessian of matrix valued functions

iiuc in continuum and fluid mechanics you encounter a lot of higher order tensors, eg stress and strain tensors, so it seems natural to refer to matrices by their natural home in that framework
