I don't know if you're going to think I'm basic as hell here but if you've a common issue like this ie skipping minus signs, terms, values etc, it really helps to consistently write it in a different colour (if possible) or font/size. It sounds very silly but I promise it works.

It wasn’t a transcription error, it was reading multiple sources with different notations

I did the same once... putting a bracket in the wrong place in an algorithm, spent a whole day debugging it.
