Exactly! Kaluza-Klein modes (and windings )are really important, since one has to compactify extra dimensions.

You mean Kaluza-Klein? The principles (high-level) with mass/energy spectrum (as vibrations) from higher dimensions are the same. The difference are the number of dimensions (26 bosonic strings and 5 KK) and strings (d=1) instead of particles (d=0), and so is the mass spectrum;)
