At some point, this discussion *must* expand beyond a small group of naysayers. Credit to @skdh and @notevenwrong for continuing to make the case, but we desperately need to move this to a wider forum.https://twitter.com/notevenwrong/status/1216839077292642314 …

https://physicsphilosophy.science.blog/2018/10/17/physics-philosophy-math/ … Does string theory successfully unify quantum mechanics and general relativity? Yes or no? Senior physicists have a great responsibility to answer this question honestly, as it may affect the careers of thousands, & the advancement of physics.

It depends on what you mean by "successfully". What counts as "success"?

Brian Greene states: "Superstring theory successfully merges general relativity and quantum mechanics." https://physicsphilosophy.science.blog/2018/10/17/physics-philosophy-math/ … If you want to reduce physics to arguing about the definition of "successfully," you'll probably never join Einstein, nor Newton, nor Dirac, nor Feynman

No, I don't want to reduce physics to arguing about the definition of "successfully". I'm just asking what you mean. String theory has succeeded in merging general relativity and quantum mechanics in some ways, but not in others. What counts as success for you?

I have answered this question here: http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2018/05/dear-dr-b-should-i-study-string-theory.html … (Though I have since become convinced that the person who asked it is not a student but a crank.)

Yeah, I've gotten emails about the same topic from the same person under more than one pseudonym. I'm not sure why I responded on Twitter just now. Just thought I'd ask them what they consider "success". I probably won't get an answer.
