CRT televisions operate by shooting electrons at the screen Magnetic fields deflect moving electrons, so placing a magnet near the CRT gives you this neat way to visualize the magnetic field linespic.twitter.com/q1W8lv5Oqh

The astute reader may notice that these curves are actually the lines perpendicular to the magnetic field More precisely, they are perpendicular to *both* the velocity of the e⁻ & the magnetic fieldpic.twitter.com/EhbmiA59dt

This is why all CRT monitors at the @NationalMagLab were monochrome back in the day. When you have a DC magnet ramping up to over 30 Tesla a few feet away, it seriously messes with a color display.

Yea I was reading about how on black and white you really won’t see it except around the white edges cause that’s where the electrons are hitting

and when attached to an antenna and tuned to a dead channel (3 in my area) it will display some of the cosmic background radiation left over from the Big Bang.
