It’s not faked. To convince yourself try @digitaldereks suggestion: Pause the gif and cover up the regions that aren’t the squares, and you’ll see that they are the same color.

I believe the illusion, but the squares are not the same tone (as rendered). Bottom and right are close, the left is way off. I suspect the lighting / camera processing is to blame.pic.twitter.com/NRTU8JVwU1
