Some 3d vis libraries allow you to put the 'camera' inside the sphere in case this seems interesting as well. For instance (I think) Java 3D (OpenGL too?) does this and can be hooked up to mouse events. I haven't played with Java 3D for over 15 years, tho.
yea i was able to do it in Blender just trying to make it look alright

Would it be difficult to create a smartphone app that shows a screenful of it (from an inside perspective) that scrolls past as you rotate in your chair, or move your phone down or up over your head?

do you have the data as an image? it should be easy to make a version that runs in a web browser eg with Three.js
