the symmetric difference has issues with constrained optimization though such as SLSQP .. if your solution is at the boundary when it calculates the jacobian it goes outside the region and depending on how many variables you have it can give you a solution outside ur constriants

This is good to know indeed! Thanks for sharing. I suppose there are no issues with using it in lattice QCD, because the lattice is usually taken to be periodic: L_0 = L_N
