The letter was written a year after she died from tuberculosis.

It doesn't, but it's *also* part of his character. It's just as easy and real to reduce him to "loving husband" as it is to reduce him to "sexist" One can find his ugly behavior indefensible and still think he was, on balance, a lot more than a "sexist piece of s***."
