not sure what the technically correct usage is, but I think I use "data show" if the data is "discrete" and "data shows" in the continuous limit The data show that of the 200 mouse subjects, ... The last 5 years of LHC data shows that...

In the second example, the subject is "years", not "data".

Either will do. Data is now a word in English. Ignore stuff about Latin. People use data as singular (the data set) or plural. Both common usage.
