Maya API is huge, but is well documented online. My twist deformation is just a custom deformer node (http://download.autodesk.com/global/docs/mayasdk2012/en_us/index.html?url=files/Writing_a_Deformer_Node_Deformer_Node_Example.htm,topicNumber=d28e9839 …), and most of the animation differences are just artistic; authoring different geo to deform, changing parameters and keyframing things differently.
