Mechanical calculators perform division by subtraction (and division by 10). They subtract the denominator from the numerator until what's left is smaller than the denominator, then divide by 10 and repeat. Dividing by zero means subtracitng zero, so it goes forever.

Does it overflow or does it give infinity a serious try?

IIRC (I’m old enough), some would work until mechanical failure.

Eventually the machine contains so much information that it collapses into one, but that takes a long time.

I have a small collection of various mechanical calculators. Almost all of them are broken, probably from earlier owners dividing by zero too much.
