Friends, Tweeters, Hive of Minds, what are some causal relationships where (a) scientists are *very* confident that the causal relationship exists and (b) the underlying mechanism remains quite unclear

I feel like a lot of BSM ideas fall under than umbrella (strong CP, CC problem, flavor structure, GUT's, etc) Things look curious/suggestive and we think there should be a reason, but they are much more aesthetic problems than something like dark matter

Yeah a bunch of folk have been up in arms about the expectation being aesthetic (I’ve been suspicious too) but I‘ve been wondering if the same can be said historically for many physical phenomena that we wanted to explain

Yeah this seems like one of the best examples given that people are literally split on whether we should expect an underlying mechanism at all. Everyone thinks the interactions btw. macroscopic objects have such a mechanism, it just might be unknown; here is a bit different
