interesting .. i'll have to think about that more .. i read "thrive" as "thrive at some point for a reasonably long time t" .. i believe you're reading is somewhere closer to meaning "thrive and continue to thrive for a time T>>t"

In the topology example, the subject went off on its own and created its foundations. That's great. But topology really got interesting when physicists drew from it and contributed back to it.
