My daughter had this problem on her HW. She asked how to use the "a" on the roofline. Turns out it isn't needed. But my first thought was that it was an error—it can't be 5. When writing problem sets I remember making sure not to overdetermined the problems. I’m sure there’s a rigorous way of doing this, but you just get a feel for it after a while.
Isn’t it unconsistent? The right angled triangle should be a 3,4,5 triple which would make c=8.
What I was trying to say is that the triangle isn't necessarily isosceles—even though it looks like it in the picture.
