Are they not just F=-kx springs?

They are .. I was referring to the animation side of it .. writing something that stretched and squished in proportion etc .. my first attempt was in 3D .. What I’m saying is that the physics was easy but the animation was annoying

Could you give a short explanation how you did it?
-
You can write a parametric curve between two points as the vector r=r0 +v*t where t in (0,1) .. then you have to modify the undulations (frequency) to be proportional to the distance stretched !

There is a miraculous program called "Rigs-of-Rods" that simulates cars, trucks, planes, boats, even TIRES (!!!), using nothing but trusses of damped harmonic oscillators. They have (I think) linear-algebra tricks that enable thousands of concurrent DHOs in real time.
