Yeah. It’s also not obvious why you need to consider representations of the universal cover of the symmetry group under quantization, and it is rarely (if ever) taught in undergraduate classes.

my understanding was that it's a nuisance to work with projective representations since it's not an honest homomorphism .. so we use the fact that the projective representations of SO(3,1) are equivalent to the oridinary reps of SL(2,C) ( the universal cover )
