Ages ago I read something in Science Times that said mathematicians figured out you have to shuffle a deck 8 times to randomize it. I have no idea what that really means. Does this ring a bell?
yea i'm not sure .. they must have used "shuffle" as to mean probably what most people do when they shuffle clearly if you throw all the cards out of a plane, blindfolded and pick them all back up they would be randomized

Yes. It was practical guidance as to how much to shuffle them in the typical manner. To this day I try to get to 7 or 8 but my family thinks I'm nuts. This NYT piece was from the 80s!
