In the video the magnet is tumbling. Does it not depend on the orientation of the falling magnet?

great question .. in principle it ought to since it changes the flux! The only case we would expect it to not is if the B-field is approximately isotropic.. i haven't worked it out entirely, but there's a paper i linked somewhere else in the comments
