It doesn’t help that SU(n) is a group of unitary matrices which is hard to not be linear (at least in one sense)
i mean .. the matrix group is by definition a linear representation ..

I think linear here means there is a one to one map to a matrix group. Not every infinite group has this, eg real addition and SU(n), I think? (Im not totally sure?)
