i agree .. theoretical high energy physics is stuck, sadly .. which is why i switched my research focus to non-perturbative QFT/ rigorous foundations to me it seems like a well-defined formalism would be a good starting point

By the way, I did my PhD on rigorous foundations of quantum field theory. I didn't make much progress in my thesis, but I learned a lot and helped my advisor write a book: http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/bsz.html … 'Twas worthwhile. Then I did other stuff.

Warning: you're gonna find your knowledge of real analysis and functional analysis severely tested. Segal did not pull any punches. Also, this book was written before I learned how to write. It's full of great stuff, but it's not easy to read.

Yup! Btw, I highly recommend Reed and Simon's "Functional Analysis", because it explains the subject with mathematical physics in mind, and it's clear and terse.
