Wouldn't a rational number with a very long period (such as the first thousand digits of pi, repeated) also produce a "mess"?
yes, but in principle this mess could be disentangled and seen as overlapping lines so we would see the "mess" get brighter and brighter

I guess I'm saying there's no way to decide when it has run long enough. But I get it, it's an illustration of a principle, not a deterministic test procedure.
