is this stable? I mean, do little disturbances in the system/initial conditions throw the bodies drastically off orbit?

oh right! you can only run a numerical simulation so far therefore it's impossible to assure stability without an analytical solution, correct?

I’m pretty sure, though I’m not sure .. I’m just quoting the paper.. to test stability you need the effective potential in a closed form
