by a quick reading of (https://www.weather.gov/jetstream/positive …) it appears that the only way to actually "tell" if there's a net positive transfer is to have a voltmeter (and 9 lives) However, there are a few signals (1) +lightning originates "higher" in the storm clouds than usual.. (cont)

(2) The flash duration is also longer than usual lightning (due to the much stronger electric necessary for the +lightning create dielectric breakdown in the air over such large distances) (cont)

(3) Most positive strikes occur near the *edge* of the cloud or from the thunderstorm's anvil from, which means that a strike can occur MORE THAN 25 MILES AWAY from precipitation (if this is the case you can be quite sure it's +lightning)
