then this is the current status quo. And if you want a well-paid 9-5 regular job, an academic path won't provide that. I get why we need it to change. But I also see benefit in saying how it is now. Many people still go into it without realising it *will* govern their lives (2/2)

I think the resolution is simple.. people say “scientists are X”, and people do science for different reasons.. some people see it as a job, and for some people it completely defines them. I personally tend towards the latter, but I’d never make it a categorical imperative

I think the majority are the latter but that's not to say they don't want the former and just work all the time out of necessity. Either way, I don't think someone should have gotten a Twitter pile-on for the tweet i quoted though
