Not all mathematicians like clunky formulas. Or formulas. And no, I don't think he was a "god among men". He was a hugely gifted person who was denied appropriate education (and food/care) by a cruel system. Very likely that many more like him have perished unknown.

(1) On your first point, I'm actually not a huge fan of this formula aesthetically either. However this equation has a much different beauty, i think. The kind of beauty that a blues dissonance takes. (2) I agree with everything you say after this.

I think there's probably no real reason and it's probably just a magic coincidence...

It should be noted that Ramanujan didn't just write this down. He derived this, and 16 other interesting expressions for 1/pi, by studying the properties of elliptic integrals and modular forms.

It's also very interesting to note that this formula is intimately related to the following near-integer formula (edited a second time because I can't figure out minus signs)pic.twitter.com/mgNPMqCbjZ

Looks like an ugly perturbative QFT calculation in curved spacetime, like the renormalization of the stress energy tensor in polynomial gravity, two-loop calculations, a5 heat kernel or b8 Hamidew coefficients ;-)
