@3blue1brown is the only person that could demystify this to any real (ha) extent for me. I'd definitely recommend checking out his videos for those who don't have a formal mathematics background.

That was really quite clear and serves as a great compliment to the explanation that was originally given to me. It's nice to see the origin of the convergent and divergent aspects of that series worked out how you did.
