      rofl, an informal proof for whether the given function is even or odd. pretty sure it just boils down to expanding (x+1)^3 and testing inputs/outputs

          An arbitrary function therefore is a sum of its even and odd parts. In group theory, you'd say that these correspond to "irreducible representations" of the group Z_2
