The Casimir effect is very cool, but it loses some of its mystique when you realize that it's just the van der waals force derived in a different language.
I had never made that connection.. but that’s a beautiful fact.. I think the fact that the two descriptions agree reinstates the mystique, for me at least.. any time I can relate QFT to something macroscopic I’m over the moon
