And writing it out like you have here really shows how the method is the same as FOILing, which everyone learns in algebra. That’s a strength of this I think. And seeing it graphically helps some kids. Teaching underlying concepts multiple ways is always a pro for kids

Personally I’m against teaching FOILing, but I’m not as against it as pure algorithms

I dont remember how I learned but what I do is 35(10+2) which i find quite easy. I think they made us memorize ab×c tables early.

That's how mental calculators do, like Arthur Benjamin, except with larger blocks. I also do it that way, but try to simplify things at the same time. For example: 35x12 = 70x6.
