I think this equation would look prettier if you multiplied both sides by sqrt(2). In its original form it's due to Ramanujan, right?
yep.. Ramanujan. At that's funny because I explicitly wrote it like this because I thought it looked prettier than the dangling 2 in sqrt(φ + 2).. perhaps my mathematical aesthetics need refining

If I can get rid of two factors of sqrt{2} in an equation at the expense of turning a single 1 into a 2, I will: it's simpler, so it probably exhibits what's really going on more clearly.
